Shrewsbury college donates £200 worth of produce to town food bank
A Shrewsbury college which donated £200 worth of food to a food bank has pledged to support the organisation again in the near future.
All students at Concord College were encouraged by the college's Christian Union to donate money which was then spent on a variety of tins and packets for Shrewsbury Food Bank, which is based in the Barnabas Centre in Longden Coleham. Volunteers at the food bank then distribute the food to families referred to the organisation.
David Elkes, who heads up the team of volunteers at Shrewsbury Food Bank, said it was the second oldest in the country, having started up 16 years ago.
He said they made up 231 emergency food parcels for the council in April as well as feeding 429 individuals – a total of nearly 2,000 tons of food.
"We tailor food parcels to suit individual needs, being very careful the donations go to the right people. We account for everything donated and we are grateful to Concord College for its contribution.
"There are 35 organisations in Shrewsbury who can refer people in time of need. They are given a voucher, we interview them, find out what their needs are and decide on the number of parcels.
"We make up parcels for single people, couples and families – we are currently supporting a family of seven. We have a lot of referrals from single men who have no cooking facilities."
