Plas Tanat was used by the Bird family as a sporting lodge and summer retreat. It is now on the market for £595,000.

Plas Tanat, at Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, was used by the Bird family as a sporting lodge and summer retreat when they lived in Birmingham.

It is also one of the few properties in the Mid Wales region which was designed as part of the arts and crafts movement which was led by William Morris in the 1860s and which continued its influence well into the 20th century.

Victoria Pocock, of selling agents Carter Jonas, described Plas Tanat as a "beautiful country house fronted by two rivers with superb sporting opportunities".

She added: "It is a gem of a property with a fascinating history.

"The Bird family used it as a sporting lodge, and with its immediate proximity to the Tanat and Rhaeadr rivers, there is some 1.5km of fishing rights which comes with the property.

"There are also further fishing rights and shooting rights available to be purchased separately."

She said: "The property itself offers excellent and flexible accommodation with arts and crafts influences running through the house.

"The gardens and grounds which surround the property also contain many features characteristic of the arts and crafts period including a covered veranda with herringbone brickwork and decorative lead work."

Plas Tanat is a five-bedroom property with several reception rooms including a kitchen and sitting room, both of which are oak panelled, drawing room, sun room and dining room.

The mature landscaped gardens comprise lawns, borders, an orchard, raised vegetable beds, soft fruit trees and river garden where the two rivers meet.

"It is just a beautiful property both inside and out, in a gloriously tranquil and highly convenient part of the Welsh countryside," said Mrs Pocock, who is based in the Shrewsbury office of Carter Jonas.

"We are expecting strong interest both locally and further afield."

The property is up for sale with a guide price of £595,000.
