Concerns raised over TNS expansion plans

Concerns have been aired by neighbours over ambitious £1m plans by current Welsh champions The New Saints to expand their base near Oswestry.

The club, currently just one point away from securing another Welsh league championship, has lodged a planning application with Shropshire Council to add a full size floodlit pitch, six floodlit mini pitches and additional parking.

The development would be adjacent to The Venue and Park Hall Stadium on Burma Road, Oswestry, on land which is currently owned by Shropshire Council.

The acquisition of the land is subject to the club receiving the necessary planning consent from Shropshire Council as well as securing funding to support the cost of the project estimated to be around £1 million from potential funding partners.

The club says the expansion will allow it to develop and forge links with schools and groups.

But some neighbours at Park Hall have written to Shropshire Council objecting to the plans.

Resident James Sinclair said in his letter of objection: "I am very worried that the water runoff from this huge proposed development could increase the flood risk to the houses on Inglis Road. I am also worried that Burma Road will not be able to cope with the traffic from these huge car parks on a regular basis."

Richard Cherrie said: "The current pitch is sunk to a certain degree and is surrounded by the stadium. This provides some protection from the noise generated when matches are being played, on match days there is an increase in the level."
