Members of the Blue and Amber Fanzine are now aiming to raise £976 for Dementia UK after learning the club legend was suffering from the condition. The figure represents £2 for every professional game Alf played.

Campaigners had originally wanted to reach the target of £488, £1 for each of his professional games.

But in less than a week, they have already managed to reach £636.50 in donations.

It was revealed by Alf's wife Joan last week that the 68-year-old grandfather has moved into a care home, can now barely speak and has no recollection of his playing career. The striker is the fourth all-time highest league scorer for the club, with 64 goals.
