Milk spilled across the carriageway after the accident on the southbound section between junction 14 for Stafford North and 15 for Stoke at around 6.30am.

Lanes two and three were closed while a clean-up operation was mounted and drivers were forced to use the hard shoulder. One lane on the northbound side of the carriageway was also closed.

The lorry driver escaped with minor injuries and did not need to go to hospital.

Staffordshire Police spokesman Sarah Davison said: "The lorry hit the central reservation spilling a load of milk. It is going to take some time to clear up."

It came after a day of hold-ups yesterday when a lorry caught fire between junction 10 for Walsall and Wolverhampton and 10a for the M54 around lunchtime yesterday. Highways Agency spokesman Jenny Hart said: "The fire caused extensive damage to the road and lane one remained closed while resurfacing took place overnight."
