Town traders today spoke of their shock following the discovery.

Mr Sloan, who lived in the town, was discovered by police at about 3.45am yesterday morning outside the HSBC bank in Cheshire Street. Police have yet to formally identify him man and are treating the death an unexplained.

A spokesman for the coroners office for Shropshire confirmed they had been informed about Mr Sloan's death. An inquest was being opened this afternoon.

Locals said Mr Sloan lived in Warren Court flats in Shropshire Street. Traders said they were greeted with a flurry of police activity when they opened their stores yesterday with the area around the bank's cash machine cordoned off.

Emma Jennings , who works in Halls card shop opposite the bank, said: "The police came to ask if we knew anything and to look at our CCTV. I'd heard a rumour someone had died but I thought someone had tried to tamper with the cash machine. You see a cash machine cordoned off and you think maybe someone was trying to clone cards, you don't think that someone might have died and 32 is no age at all."

Lynne Jenkins, who works in Drayton Deli, also opposite the bank, said: "We opened at 7.30am and saw everything sectioned off and a policewoman sat in a van."

Michelle Purcell works in Barnado's charity shop in Cheshire Street. She said: "When I came in at 8.15am I thought there had been a bank robbery or the cash machine had been rammed. The whole area around the cash machine was sectioned off and there were three police vehicles nearby. The police came in to ask if they could look at our CCTV."

Detective Inspector Tom Harding, the senior investigating officer, today renewed the appeal for information.

"We are anxious to hear from anyone who can help us establish the man's movements immediately beforehand or who can throw any light on the circumstances leading up to his death," he said.

Anyone with any information is urged to call Shrewsbury CID on 101.
