The man, named locally as 21-year-old Dan Hinton, was walking under the bridge that carries the A442 dual carriageway over Kemberton Road in Madeley, when he was injured in the rush-hour attack.

He was kept in hospital overnight but it is believed his injuries were not life-threatening and he was expected to return home today.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing and is still being questioned by police.

The was sealed off until mid afternoon as officers investigated.

The first person to help Mr Hinton after the attack, which happened at about 5.30pm yesterday, said he went into the Cuckoo Oak pub covered in blood.

The witness, who did not wish to be named, said Mr Hinton told him he had been grabbed from behind "in a kind of bear hug" before being stabbed.

Steve Paskin, a friend of Mr Hinton's grandfather, said: "We all worry about our kids when they go out on to the streets, so for this to happen must come as a great shock to the family – it's all of our worst nightmares. I just feel that something needs to be done about this.

"Someone must know something. As a parent of teenagers myself, I can only guess what this kid's family are going through."

Mr Paskin, 48, a bus driver from Woodside in Telford, used Facebook to appeal to anyone who knew who the attacker was to pass the information to police.

A short stretch of the A4169 Kemberton Road, underneath the A442 dual carriageway, was closed by police and was expected to remain shut until mid morning today.

Kemberton Road links Madeley with the Halesfield industrial estate and at the time of the incident would have been busy with workers making their way home.

West Mercia Police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: "Police are investigating after a man was found on Kemberton Road in Madeley with a number of stab wounds to his chest at just before 5.30pm last night 19). His injuries are not life threatening.

"A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and he remains in custody."
