Bone found by builders at Bishop's Castle Town Hall

Contractors working on the near £1 million revamp of an historic Shropshire town hall uncovered a bone when they were ripping up the floor.

Discovery – the bone found by contractors

The macabre discovery was made at Bishop's Castle Town Hall this week – but an archaeologist who visited the site does not believe it is human.

Sam Hine, project manager for the revamp, said: "It was in the entrance area, we are putting in under-floor heating there so we needed to lower the level of the floor.

"The contractors are always very careful when they are digging things up anyway, and at first they saw a piece of wood before continuing and finding the bone.

"We had an archaeologist in on Thursday and he has said that although he does not believe the bone is human, that we should continue to tread very carefully in that area."

Mrs Hine said it was believed the bone had been brought in during the last major period of building work at the hall, possibly with stones and rubble used to prop things up. It comes weeks after builders working on the £700,000 revamp of the town hall uncovered a jail cell which had not seen the light of day for 100 years.

The aim of the town hall project is to restore the grade II-listed building to its former glory, with work expected to be finished by the new year.

It will be used as a community hub.

Cash for the revamp scheme has come in the main from a £676,800 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which was awarded last September.
