Shrewsbury Town Council has put forward proposals for a Halloween-themed event on October 26, featuring a host of stalls, a fun fair and spooky activities for children.

The outdoor market would see stalls lining Gloucester Avenue from the war memorial near St Chad's Terrace to the Statue of Hercules.

At a meeting of the authority's recreation and leisure committee, Mike Cox, outdoor recreation and asset manager, said electricity would be needed to light up the avenue.

A large marquee could be set up near the Statue of Hercules to host a series of Halloween-themed competitions for youngsters, including a pumpkin parade and prizes for the best fancy dress.

Mr Cox invited Shrewsbury mayor Jon Tandy to judge the competitions.

The outdoor market would take place from late morning to about 9.30pm, and would also feature live acoustic music.

Mr Tandy welcomed the idea saying that he would also like to see Shrewsbury host a Christmas market similar to the German markets held in Birmingham every December.

Mr Cox reported that the Quarry was in demand with local event organisers.

He said bosses at the Shrewsbury Food Festival had booked the park for the next four years and that the organisers of the Shrewsbury Marathon wanted the venue for the next three years.

Mr Cox said: "These people come back year on year because of the good venue we provide."

Councillors commented on the recent cancellation of the Quarry's annual outdoor concert because promoters had been unable to secure a big act.

Town clerk Helen Ball said: "We do follow V Festival and we have also had Glastonbury festival this year.

"The demand for staging and for toilets has been extremely high."

Councillor Beverley Baker said: "There were very good reasons why we could not get anyone."

She added: "I think the way we are using the Quarry, with events like the food festival, is great."
