Share your memories of the Coronation

Next week marks 60 years since the Coronation - and we want to hear your memories of the day.

Last year's Diamond Jubilee celebrations marking the moment the young Princess Elizabeth came to the throne sealed the place our Queen is held in the nation's affections.

Now the anniversary of her Coronation is coming up.

The Shropshire Star will capture some of your memories - and shropshirestar.com will create an archive record of an event that marked the beginning of a new era for Britain and the Commonwealth.

None of us will ever forget last year's magical Diamond Jubilee year, including the Queen's visit to Shropshire.

Now it is time for Coronation celebrations.

It was a damp, drizzly and grey day in London as the golden coach carried Elizabeth to Westminster Abbey. She had actually been resistant to having the great occasion filmed inside the Abbey.

Happily, she changed her mind, or we would have been denied that wonderful, grainy footage of an irreplaceable slice of our history.

So where were you when it all happened? In London? At a street party? Watching the new era unfold on a little black and white TV, maybe in somebody else's front room? Or a baby in arms taken along by the family but knowing little about it at the time?

As we get set to mark the anniversary moment, let's hear some of your memories, or those passed on to you by the previous generation who maybe did remember it very well.

This year is not going to be as busy as last but there is a summer of celebrations centred on the Palace and the solemn service of thanksgiving, always so important to Her Majesty.

How fortunate to have grown, matured and got older through this particular Elizabethan reign with a Queen who for more than 60 glorious years has never once let us down.

So let's hear your memories, share your thoughts and tell your story about where you were or what you know about Coronation Day. If you have any precious pictures marking the occasion let's see those as well.
