Youngsters could be playing on new facilities in Maes Alwyn play area in Weston Rhyn as early as the summer holidays.

As part of plans for the new play area a consultation event will be held at Weston Rhyn Institute, in Bronygarth Road, for residents to have their say on how the cash could be spent.

This will take place this evening from 5pm-7.30pm.

The cash has been given to the village from bosses building a development nearby.

Shropshire councillor David Lloyd said in the past there have been petitions from residents calling on more facilities for young people. Shaun Burkey, from Shropshire Council, is helping with the plans for a new play area.

He said a number of questionnaires have already been sent out to homes and the school in the village. He will use these responses, as well as those from tonight, to help him create the design of the new area.

"This evening gives people the opportunity to talk to me directly and see what is on offer," he said. "They will be able to look at the catalogue and realise the huge range of play equipment there is available."

He said there has been some people who have also been calling for no play equipment be placed in the area and that the consultation was the time for people to air their views. It is expected that the thousands of pounds of cash could pay for three or four items.

The next stage towards getting the equipment will see Mr Burkey coming up with a number of designs which he will then send to companies.

Once he has heard back from the companies he will be able to go back to the community to see which of the designs they will prefer.

Mr Burkey said: "I am hoping that it will be done by summer holidays, that is the target."

David Lloyd, Shropshire Councillor, said: "The important thing about this meeting is it is a good chance for parents to have a say on what they want to be there. It is an exciting thing for young people."
