Transport hub proposal for Shrewsbury mail office site

A 600-space car park and bus station should be built in Castle Foregate, business leaders said today. Graham Galliers is chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber, which represents 140 businesses.

Mr Galliers said a new transport hub was needed in north Shrewsbury.

He said it would serve passengers using Shrewsbury Railway Station, and suggested a car park and bus station could be built on the site of the current Royal Mail sorting office, which is due to close next year, putting 170 jobs at risk.

"Shrewsbury Business Chamber has an ambition for a new station car park because the current one is pretty grotty, as well as a new bus station," he said.

"We wondered whether we could do that on the sorting office site in Castle Foregate, I feel very sorry for the people who are getting displaced but if it is going to happen then I hope Shropshire Council jumps in and buys the land."

Mr Galliers said he would like to see a 600-space car park created, alongside a new bus station to replace the one in Raven Meadows.

He said: "The car park would be very close to the centre of town and people catching trains could drive straight in or out."

Mr Galliers said if the bus station was to relocate its current site in Raven Meadows would become available for redevelopment.
