Bosses at Sainsbury's applied to Shropshire Council to build a 30,200 sq ft superstore in Market Drayton. The store would be built at the Vicon Works industrial units off the A53. The plans include creating a restaurant, a 250-space car park, a bakery, a recycling centre and landscaping.

Supermarket bosses say the scheme will improve the retail choice for people in the area and respect the surrounding community.

Plans to redevelop the site have received the backing of residents, with 63 per cent of people offering full support and a further 11 per cent supporting some proposals, according to results of public consultation.

During the consultation period a two-day exhibition was held where almost 300 members of the public came to view and discuss the plans with members of Sainsbury's project team.

An information leaflet was also distributed to about 5,000 properties in the Market Drayton area.

Supermarket bosses say people were pleased about the competition and greater shopping choice in the area, along with the prospect of new job opportunities.

A report on behalf of the applicant says: "The proposed store will improve choice and competition for convenience food shopping for residents of Market Drayton and the wider catchment area.

"The proposed development aims to respect the surrounding community and site context. Through a fully coordinated design process with consultation and direct dialogue with the immediate residents, the scheme has evolved to address concerns raised by statutory consultees, third parties and the public.

"It will provide much-needed facilities for the town and local area and create new jobs for the local community."
