Europe's largest rail freight firm is to take over the running of a terminal in Shropshire, it was announced today. DB Schenker Rail will run the £7.75 million International Railfreight Park in Telford.

It will pay all the connection charges, rates and operating costs of the Donnington site.

JG Russell, which previously ran the park, quit its 15-year lease in December after losing money on the scheme.

David Legge, business manager at DB Schenker Rail, said: "DB Schenker Rail is proud to have been awarded the contract to operate and manage the terminal and by working with Telford & Wrekin Council we aim to make it a success.

"We will integrate the terminal at Telford into our terminal network throughout the UK, in order to maximise growth in volumes handled at the facility."

The appointment was confirmed at a behind-closed-doors meeting of councillors.

Charles Smith, council cabinet member for housing, regeneration and economic development, said: "DB Schenker Rail's appointment is a fantastic shot in the arm for the local business economy and we are delighted that they are committed to investing in Telford."
