Hundreds of people lined the streets of Shrewsbury to celebrate St George's Day as a scout parade marched through the town.

More than 200 scouts, from 16 groups across the area, marched from Shrewsbury Castle to the Square in the centre of town to take part in a special service on Sunday.

It was held as people from across the country celebrated the patron saint of England's big day in an annual show of patriotism.

Traditional songs were sung prior to the parade and the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Algernon Heber-Percy, was also in attendance.

The groups from Shropshire Borders District were made up of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts and were joined by the Shropshire Youth Brass Band and the Boreatton Scout Group Corp of Drums as they marched down Pride Hill. There was also a street collection in aid of the Shropshire District Scouting.

Sharon Skelton, chairperson of Shropshire Borders District executive committee, said: "We marched from the castle to the Square but unfortunately by the time we got down to the bottom the heavens opened and we had torrential rain and hail.

"We had to gather under the market hall but it went off well and it was a great day."
