Ludlow to look at ways of boosting park and ride service

Council leaders will look into ways to get more visitors to use Ludlow’s park-and-ride bus service to tackle increasing parking problems in the town.

Ludlow Town Council voted last night to hold a meeting with traders, residents and Shropshire Council in response to calls for action to free up more spaces on the town’s streets.

It comes after resident John Diamond, of Mill Street, launched a campaign for more parking concessions for residents, a ban on motorhomes using on-street spaces and for traders to be forced to use the Linney car park.

Councillor Jim Smithers, from Ludlow Town Council, said: “Parking is obviously Shropshire Council’s remit but after Mr Diamond came down and made a representation we decided we would get together and talk with Shropshire Council and other representatives interested in the issues to look for solutions.

“Ludlow is getting quite successful and visitor numbers are up, so at the end of the day we have got to try to get more people to use the park-and-ride scheme.”

Maybe if it ran more regularly and until a bit later in the evening it would help. people coming into Ludlow to work do not want to have to hang about at the P&R waiting for a bus and those who finish work later in the evening (or stay on for evening meetings) can’t use it.
But having said that I have only rarely had a problem finding a parking space in town (such at when the Food Festival is on), if you are willing to park in the car parks then there are always spaces in at least one of the 3 main car parks.

If you know your way about, there are plenty of places where you can park for free on the edges of Ludlow and which are not subject to parking restrictions.

That said the way to get more people to use the Park and Ride facility is, as you correctly identify,to make the service more frequent and in operation for longer each day. And to give those leaving their cars at the Eco-Park peace of mind, security at the Park and Ride car park there needs to be drastically improved.

However, the real way to make the scheme work would be to make the service completely free, paid for by significant increases in car parking charges on the car parks in the town, excluding from any such increase the cost of local residents’ permits who have no option but to park on the streets where they live.

As for freeing up more parking spaces in the old town, drastically reduce the provision of disabled parking spaces. There are far too many of these which are never used.

Please may we have a 21st century bus for the service? Current one not big enough and subject to breakdown.

The trouble with the park and ride car park is it is to isolated. They have been busting into cars quite regularly because the CCTV cameras are not working/not monitored. It is to far from town to walk if the bus has stopped running. A taxi from town to the car park of an evening can set you back £10. Not worth the bother for most tourist’s.
