A 54-year-old Shropshire man had to be rescued after plunging down an old mine shaft in Snowdonia.
The man fell through an old wooden floor straight into water from a disused lead mine while exploring, mountain rescue officials said.
The man, from Telford, was unable to climb out of the dark hole near Llyn Geirionydd, a lake above the Conwy Valley.
A passer-by heard his female companion shouting for help and dialled 999 before nearly 20 members of Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation got to the scene.
It happened at about 5.30pm yesterday.
