A new £25 million Telford school has moved a step closer to completion after workers finished building its huge domed roof.

A topping out ceremony was held today at the Abraham Darby Sports and Learning Community in Madeley to celebrate the achievement, which puts the school on course to be open in January.

The mass expanse of glass, wood and steal will sit at the centre of the learning community which will cater for 1,050 pupils and will also feature a massive sports and leisure complex, including a pool.

Telford & Wrekin Council chiefs say the learning community has been built to incorporate Abraham Darby Academy as well as Woodlands Primary School.

Pupils from both schools were joined by leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, Councillor Kuldip Sahota, at the ceremony to bury three time capsules on site.

Mr Sahota said: "I am hugely impressed with the new Abraham Darby School and the fact that the Building Schools for the Future programme started under the last Government continues to deliver fantastic new facilities for Telford."

Heavy equipment moved on to the Abraham Darby Academy campus 15 months ago. After the new learning community is built the old school will be demolished.
