Traders today claimed that millions of pounds will be lost from Tenbury’s economy if councils refuse calls to build a temporary road bridge when Teme Bridge shuts for major repairs.

And some businesses could even shut up shop and leave the town if the bridge is closed for several months.

Vital repairs, expected to take at least two months, will start in December on crumbling masonry on the historic bridge, which is a main route into the town.

Shropshire and Worcestershire councils, who jointly own the bridge, have said there are currently no plans for a temporary bridge, but have vowed to maintain pedestrian access.

Chris Dell, chairman of Tenbury Tourism Group, called on the councils to urgently think again, claiming the project will kill off many shops and pubs.

Mr Dell said: “If they go ahead with a full closure half the town will be dead within four weeks.

“It’s something traders are desperately worried about and a number have said they expect to shut down and leave if there’s a long closure.”

Ken Pollock, who represents Tenbury on Worcestershire County Council, said: “It would be very difficult if not impossible to put up a temporary bridge. I think it’s just not feasible.

“There is no question it is going to be disruptive but with adequate diversions we’ll cope.”
