A "substantial" amount of cash has been stolen after a cash-in-transit robbery outside a building society in Mid Wales.

The robbery happened at the Nationwide Building Society in High Street, Newtown, at 10pm yesterday. It is not believed anybody was injured during the incident.

Dyfed Powys Police said it was appealing for witnesses.

Chief Inspector Pete Westlake, of the force communication unit, said: "Any persons who were in the High Street at about 10pm or anybody who has any information in respect of the offence is asked to contact CID at Newtown."

The raid comes just weeks after County Goldsmiths in Church Street, Welshpool was targeted by armed robbers in a failed attempt to make off with cash and jewellery.

Police have put up a £5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprits after the incident on December 1.

Nobody from Nationwide Bank was able to comment today. Anybody with information should call the police on 0845 330 2000 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
