Oswestry heritage railway ‘could cross trunk roads’
Monday 18th October 2010, 10:12AM BST.
A national inspector of railways has said there is no reason why Oswestry’s heritage railway can’t cross trunk roads near the town.
The Cambrian Heritage Railways wants trains to cross the A483 south of Oswestry and the A5/A483 to the north.
Those behind the plans recently met David Keay, HM Principal Inspector of Railways.
He said statutory powers for the line between Gobowen and Llanyblodwel remained, which would allow its use by either a heritage railway or for freight.

I am amazed that the question was asked in the first place. Recent history has shown that railway operators, including heritage railways, have the very highest standards of safety compared with those of a tiny minority of idiot road vehicle drivers. The antics of the latter should not be a consideration when heritage railways are performing the valuable task of reopening closed/dormant lines.

That’s excellent news. Wonder what the view of the Highways Agency is though? Be good to hear from all sides.

It was the Highways Agency’s forebearers whom installed the two new level crossings when building the Oswestry by-pass.
They should also maintain them too?
