Vandals have gone on a wrecking spree, causing of damage to newly revamped toilets and a town park.

An eight foot planter was knocked over and toilet doors were kicked in at Jubilee Park in Whitchurch just hours before the town's heritage centre was targeted by thieves, who fled with the cash from a charity collection box, estimated to be £500.

The incident at Jubilee Park is thought to have caused £1,500 of damage and happened just days before the vandal-hit toilet block was due to re-open following a £2,500 makeover.

Damage from both incidents is thought to cost £3,000. The weekend's vandalism has been met with frustration from town councillors who say they were looking forward to see the public toilets fully re-open since they were purchased from the former North Shropshire District Council last March.

Peter Martin, Whitchurch Town Council clerk, said: "We have spent a great deal of time and money on improving the toilets.

"We will be working closely with police to prevent further vandalism."

Mr Martin added the planter had only just been planted.
