Rail passengers escaped injury after their train smashed into a barrier at a Mid Wales level crossing.

The barrier landed in the path of the train at Abermule after it was struck by a lorry yesterday morning.

The train suffered slight damage but was able to carry on to Machynlleth Railway Station to be inspected.

Several other train services in Mid Wales were delayed by the crash and British Transport Police have launched an investigation.

Jenny Dickens, British Transport Police spokeswoman, said: "At 10.11am on Wednesday, British Transport Police received a report that a lorry had struck a barrier at Abermule old station level crossing in Powys.

"British Transport Police officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from Dyfed Powys Police and Network Rail.

"An investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing and the lorry driver will be interviewed as part of that investigation."

Arriva Trains Wales spokesman Eryl Jones said: "The incident involved the 8.09am Birmingham to Aberystwyth train service.

"At about 10am it was in collision with a barrier at Abermule level crossing. The barrier was lying in the path of the train. Thankfully neither the train staff or passengers were injured."
