Book club: Stepdog by Nicole Gallard

A book billed as a disarmingly charming and warmhearted romantic comedy about a woman, her dog - and the man who risks life and limb to prove he's good enough for them both - is this month's offering for older readers as part of The Shropshire Star Book Club.

Published

Stepdog is Nicole Gallard's sixth novel. She is a native of Martha's Vineyard in America, and writes a cheeky etiquette column for the Martha's Vineyard Times.

Staff from the PDSA in Telford will be reviewing the book and you can have your say on the title and others we have featured this year at shropshirestar.com/bookclub

Meanwhile, the Shropshire Star will soon be offering you the chance to read the first chapter of comedian David Walliams' new book for free.

He has been described as a modern-day Roald Dahl since he turned his hand to writing children's books.

And his new release Grandpa's Great Escape is expected to become a best seller.

It will soon become one of the latest titles in the Shropshire Star Book Club.

That means you can read an extract from the book at shropshirestar.com, as well as a chapter of our other book of the month, Stepdog.

Walliams admits he draws inspiration from Dahl and describes comparisons as a "huge compliment". He has certainly mirrored the author's success, making £7 million last year alone from his children's books and outselling the likes of Jacqueline Wilson and Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins.

The book has all of Walliams' charm, telling the story of a World War Two veteran who gets confused but is understood by his grandson Jack. Together they embark on the adventure of their lives.

Claverley Junior School pupils will be road testing the book, providing their reviews in the next few weeks.
