Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival a big draw for crowds - with pictures and video

[gallery] Top cartoonists and caricaturists from around the world took over Shrewsbury with a lively display of colourful animations as part of a popular festival.

Crowds took advantage of the sunny weather to flock to Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival where dozens of people demonstrated their skills in The Square.

People could also enjoy exhibitions, workshops, music, animation and live cartooning.

This year the festival was based around the theme of food and drink, and the numerous cartoonists spent the day drawing humorous and witty images to entertain members of the public.

There was also a Fast Food Takeaway Shack serving freshly made drawings, and a live cartoon performance "The Great British Cook Off Melodrawma".

Wilbur Dawbarn, a comics artist and cartoonist, travelled up from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, to attend the festival.

He said: "I love this festival it is brilliant. It is great that it is based in such a brilliant town as Shrewsbury.

"I love all the medieval architecture here.

"It is a great celebration of cartoons and is great to be a part of it.

"I have been coming to the festival for about seven years now. There are cartoonists here from all over the UK and also one from Australia who comes every year."

Also well as the activities in the Sqaure, there was also exhibitions at Bear Steps and Theatre Severn will more than 100 cartoons to tantalise visitors' taste buds.

The exhibition at the Bear Steps, St Alkmund's Square will run until April 29.

The exhibition at Theatre Severn runs from April through to late May and includes an auction of the Worship of Bacchus. Other ingredients that can be found in the FBC Manby Bowdler Gallery include animation tips, clips, storyboards and cartoon motifs.

Roger Penwill, a cartoonist who is based in Ludlow and festival founder, led a live cartoon performance "The Great British Cook Off Melodrawma".

He said: "A melodrawma is 12 cartoons draw by a team of three with a narration and music as well.

"It is just one of the many live events available today.

"This is the 14th festival and there is a good crowd here today.

"It is a great chance for us all to get together.

"We do get people coming back year after year for the festival, and especially for the workshops.

"It is great to see so many people enjoying the event."
