The finale of the two-day event could be seen from around the town after thousands filled the Quarry for the 129th show of its kind.

Colourful displays, show gardens and immaculate flowers were the main attractions while visitors also enjoyed music, cooking demonstrations and celebrity guests.

Now famous across the country, the show attracted nurseries and gardeners from around the UK with marquees packed full of bright flowers judged by some of the top experts.

But there was also the chance for green-fingered amateurs to have a go, with a number of classes showing off talents in art, floral display and produce.

Despite having been going more than a century, organisers said there is still a huge interest in the show which is now the world's longest running horticultural show in one location. Nigel Pearson, of Shropshire Horticultural Society, said: "Friday was a good day and over the course of 10 hours I think we had about 13,000 people – it was certainly more than last year.

"It was busy but with nice weather which is good.

"It wasn't too hot and it didn't rain so all the plants here were in top condition and everything went the way we wanted."

A small shower on Saturday morning couldn't dampen spirits, and Mr Pearson said it helped to freshen up the plants ahead of the busy day.

Celebrity guests this year included BBC Gardener's World and author Sarah Raven and Sky Living's chef Gizzi Erskine both putting on demonstrations and offering tips to fans.

Music entertained visitors throughout the event.
