Mr Knowles, who presents the BBC One daytime show, tweeted last night:

The programme is coming to the aid of former firefighter Joe Grafton, who has been forced to live in a caravan with his young daughter Lucy.

Mr Grafton, from Hopesay in the south of the county, was forced to retire from the fire service after a back injury and also recently lost his wife.

Together with a massive amount of work needing to be done on what was supposed to be an idyllic country home, Mr Grafton's misfortune has meant he could not finish the project.

Work is due to start proper on Monday next week.

Mark Miller, project manager and carpenter on the long-running show, said: "Unfortunately the back story to it is that Joe lost his wife basically overnight.

"She was taken into hospital and a couple of days later she passed away and Joe was left with his daughter."
