All boats have now been allocated for Severn Hospice's annual Dragon Boat Festival in Shrewsbury on Sunday, but the charity is urging supporters to go along to the event and cheer on the teams.

The festival will see teams of up to 20 people race 40ft dragon boats along the river by Pengwern Boat Club.

The 250-metre course for the race will start at Kingsland Toll Bridge. Rowers will make their way upstream to cross the finish line outside the boat club.

The event attracts hundreds of spectators to the Quarry park to take in the festival atmosphere.

Elodie Home, fundraising events manager at Severn Hospice, said: "Our Dragon Boat Festival has been an exciting part of our events calendar for a number of years. It's a great day out for the teams taking part and the hundreds of people who come along to watch.

"This year's event has proved very popular with all 32 places being snapped up well in advance of the official registration closing date. Everyone is welcome to come along and watch the teams battle it out. Racing is due to start at about 10am."

Last year the event raised in excess of £40,000 and was won by the Ashcocks team, made up of rowers from the Peacock Inn and Ashley's Wine Bar, both in Shrewsbury.
