Charities, community groups, and other voluntary organisations are being urged to apply for a share of this year's Cash For Your Community scheme, which we are running for the second year in partnership with Shrewsbury-based Enterprise Flex-e-Rent.

The money will be shared between up to 50 good causes.

Youth organisations, volunteer groups, sports clubs, senior citizens' societies and charities are all invited to apply for a share of the cash – essentially any bona-fide voluntary group based in Shropshire or Mid Wales can apply for the fund.

Groups have until February 13 to apply for a slice of the money, and the successful organisations will be announced on March 3.

Last year the first applications were received within hours of the launch.

Once the 50 groups have been chosen, readers will be invited to support their favoured causes by collecting tokens printed in the Shropshire Star between April 16 and May 23.

The more tokens each group collects the bigger the share of the money, although all 50 will be guaranteed a share of at least £50.

To qualify, organisations or groups must have a constitution which details who the members, trustees or directors are.

They must also have a full set of audited accounts and a bank account in the name of the group with at least two non-related signatories.

Shropshire Star editor Martin Wright said he was delighted to be running the scheme for the second year running.

He said: "One of the most rewarding things about Cash For Your Community was seeing how the groups are able to use the money for the benefit of the areas they serve.

"So many of the groups which received money last year said how much of a difference it made to their work, helping them to make life better for hundreds, if not thousands of people across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

"It also highlighted the wealth of wonderful volunteer groups which our county is lucky enough to possess, from community transport groups, through to sports clubs and youth organisations, right the way through to projects such as the Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust which does excellent work to improve our environment."
