Blog: No love affair over Daybreak

“We love you for spending the week with us here at Daybreak” chimed Adrian Chiles as the newest ITV morning show closed today. Unfortunately Adrian the feeling is not mutual, writes blogger Tracey O’Sullivan.

Now I gave this GMTV replacement the benefit of the doubt on Monday after it failed to completely win me over. I thought it had potential and once the initial fanfare had died down it would settle down and get on with the job.

No such luck. This programme still depends on a procession of its own correspondents on the sofa to fill the time which repeated appearances throughout the morning.

The big interview today was Price Charles but seeing as Adrian and co-presenter Christine Bleakley went to him at Clarence House there wasn’t a single guest in the studio.

Did someone cut the budget for guests to pay for their new presenters by any chance?  Because if they did they shouldn’t have.

The more I watched Adrian and Christine the more I think they’re just not right for this time of day. Watching them squeeze into those ridiculous snow suits this morning in the Cool for School featurette was the most amusement I’ve had all week as I renamed grumpy Chiles as Po and clinging limpet Christine as La La.

In fact the Teletubbies would probably do a better job. I’ve had enough of this pairs so-called “chemistry” and even their attempts to inject some humour into proceedings didn’t seem as easy going today – perhaps the novelty of those early mornings is wearing off.

And the problem is any failings in their partnership are glaringly obvious because producers have not given them the best material to work with. The studio looked on the verge of being dingy today as “that view” was cloaked in darkness until almost 7am.

Christine made some cringe worthy effort to remind people it was there as she went outside to answer critics who complained it was fake. Perhaps it should have been and at least viewers could go back to waking up to something bright and nice to look at in the mornings.

The content was ramped up but it still consisted of rehashed stories and far too much repetition.

No doubt Adrian and Christine will have breathed a sigh of relief that the first week has passed without any major disaster. But they should drag their team back into the office this weekend and go back to the drawing board. Because Daybreak is not working at the moment and possibly heading for its own high noon.

what have you done to my mornings?? Is this what I get for years of faithful viewing to GMTV? Adrian looking like a sack of spuds that somebodys dumped on the settee, in fact he does look like Mr. potato head, and the ever grinning cheshire cat sat alongside him gets to look more and more like Dick Emery playing the Vicar (the big teeth) I HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT! The dreary backdrop, the setting, you have taken the casual atmosphere and warmth out of it.
Goodbye from me and over to BBC.

Put so well!! I couldn’t agree more. I am so relieved to know that others feel the same. Not worth waking for. Adrian makes me feel uncomfortable. He needs glasses to read the autocue?? he looks grim face and sounds worse. Christine and he were too close on the sofa . They were ill at ease and uncomfortable in their skins. Bring back Penny Smith.

I have given it a week but will be turning over to BBC for the first time since GMTV started all those years ago. I used to look forward to being gently eased into the day but it’s lost all the things I used to watch it for. New and re-vamped doesn’t always mean better and certainly not in this case!

The new Daybreak programme is just Horrible. The set is cold ,the presenters are awkward and amateurish and the content is boring. When they started dispensing with the old presenters we all felt as though we had lost members of our family, we knew them so well but I thought give the new ones a chance. I have, but, sorry, they really aren’t my cup of tea, so, as we head into the Winter, it will be the good old Beeb for me, at least there is a little more warmth and human kindness there.

I totally agree with the above i have never enjoyed the one show with the two presenters that are now on in the mornings. I just want to slap his face and her voice really gets on my nerves. I have not watched morning tv since gmtv finished and i will not watch it whilst they are on it. Please Please bring back the old gmtv. I have always watched it in the mornings and loved it but not any more. I am so glad that i am not alone.

Bring back GMTV.program,as I can not stand this person called Adrian Chiles. Is he trying to sit on Christine Bleakley lap.?
When he was on with the world football,he was
one bad commentator, never giving the other people a chance to have their say. The money that ITV. is giving him ,could be given to some charity,he is not worth the money. And I
like to point out ,the way he was interveiwing
HRH Prince Charles, was a disgrace. Get shot of him ,before you loose a lot more viewers.

I think ITV have made a really big mistake.

Unfortunately I do agree with the most of the comments submitted. Whilst the chemistry between Adrian and Christine worked on the One Show, it seems out of place for an early morning show. furthermore please bring back Claire, the current weather girl looks like an animated marionette pumping up the bagpipes with her arm!

BIG BIG MISTAKE getting rid of GMTV. Judging by all weeks previous comments you’ll be losing a lot of viewers to BBC. Bring back GMTV and it’s presenters it was so much better than what you are giving us now. I gave up after Tuesday and have switched to BBC

i think that iTV have probably assertained that most people just need a quick fix of news, weather and gossip before they head out to work, school run, shopping etc etc.

Anyone sitting through the whole show and then complaining it’s repetitive should perhaps contemplate getting up off the sofa and doing something meaningful.

Od dear! What a mistake. I don’t like the new set, the Music or Adrian. We stopped watching the ‘One Show,’ because of him. He always looks unkempt and has a really boring voice. Hope no long running contracts have been signed. Daybreak needs to go.

None of the presenters have a personality.
The news reader used to do 60 seconds on bbc3 and her inexperience shows.
Adrian and the horse lady are just terrible. No atmosphere what so ever!
As mentioned by others, the set is drab, the presenters are drab, the content is drab. Toatal and utter rubbish.
I loved watching kate, andrew and emma- you felt as though you knew them. The set was bright and cheery and they were always cheerful and you could tell that they loved their work.
You get none of this what so ever with the current trash they have signed.
I think i recall their contracts bieng worth £500,000 or was it a million? i cant remember but they would only have had to have paid me £30000 and im sure i could have done a better job!
    Rant over.

Agree with all the above, what a load of bland tosh, no chemistry, just blah blah yawn. The presenters from GMTV all bounced off each other and the show was entertaining, informative, and funny but now a big load of nothing, I mark my tv to turn over when Lorraine comes on but till then I’ll be watching Sky news.

Hmm, the 22 comments above mean there are more people having their say on this than probably ever used to watch GMTV!

GMTV were haemorrhaging money for years, not to mention the way they ripped viewers off with their phone-ins, ITV’s financial woes are such that they had to do something to try & reverse this. ‘Daybreak’ may work, it may not, personally I think Adrian Chiles is a terrific broadcaster.

I totally disagree with all the comments made so far about daybreak. I actually enjoyed it and I strongly believe it is so much better than GMTV. Whether you like or dislike the presenters it is a really good programme. It wasn’t a big mistake because GMTV was so boring, old, cheap, tacky and repeatitive. I used to watch it years ago but the programme made me fall asleep so I stopped watching it. The same goes for BBC and Sky Sunrise again boring, dull and lackluster programmes. There is a reason why GMTV was axed because it was in effect rubbish. Like society, television changes and I think people should accept that.

What a big big mistake itv have made. The GMTV presenters just gelled so well together and that made it so enjoyable and easy to watch. Kate and Clare were best friends and they chatted about their personal lives and did not just read an autocue!!!Adrian and Christine are doing just that very very boring to watch and Christine is so annoying with her constant grinning. Bring back GMTV you know the old saying if it aint broke dont fix it. I’ll be watchin BBc from now on.

I have to agree with the majority of people, Daybreak is awful, the presenters look uncomfortable, the content is boring, bring back GMTV and most of all Penny Smith, she was the star, her wacky humour made the show. I for one will not be watching this programme anymore, BBC for me from Monday morning

Keith Chegwin is now longer on our screens….Daybreak is the world’s saviour!
Daybreak is a refreshing change from the dated, horrid terracotta set that was full of equally ‘orange’ presenters. GMTV was a waste of money and I personally think GMTV and BBC Breakfast have two very different audience types. The viewers of GMTV required less coherent, less factual and less informative broadcasting. Therefore now that Daybreak reflects BBC Breakfast all of the ‘GMTV’ viewers are up in arms. I personally enjoy now having the choice of either channel, although I must admit the dreary advertisement breaks are preventing me from choosing Daybreak over BBC Breakfast.

I do not like Daybreak at all. I used to love waking up to the bright set of GMTV, and the smiling faces of Ben, Kate, Andrew and Emma. Now they are gone, mornings aren’t the same. The new show is boring, the set is cold and the presenters are wooden. I never liked then on the One Show, i think it is now much better without them. I watched Dayebreak for abouthalf an hour on the first day, but i was so annoyed with it that i promptly switched over the BBC Breakfast. Alhthough the BBC isn’t quite the same as GMTV, i still prefer it to daybreak. GMTV will never come back, but i think ITV may be realising now that they made a mistake. As a teenager, i will be the viewer of the future and Daybreak will not be my chosen breakfast programme. I feel let down and disappointed.
