Young readers celebrate summer reading challenge at Donnington library
Children mark end of reading challenge with special visit from local author
Young readers celebrated the end of the Holiday Reading Challenge with a special event at Donnington and Muxton Community Library.
Children and their families gathered at the library on Monday (August 24), to mark the end of the 2026 challenge, with Shropshire children's author Peter Russell Peake joining the celebrations.
Known for The Farmer James Series and Robbie the Farm Ranger, Mr Peake met young readers, chatted with families and shared how he created some of his best-known farmyard characters.
The Holiday Reading Challenge encouraged children to read eight books during the summer holidays, collecting stamps on a reading challenge card as they completed each title.
Designed to promote reading for pleasure and help maintain literacy skills over the school break, the challenge concluded with the celebration event at the library.
Children also had the chance to explore Mr Peake's illustrations, hear about his writing process and receive a certificate and goody bag in recognition of their achievements.
His stories, featuring countryside adventures, farm animals and the character Robbie the Farm Ranger, have become favourites with many local families.
