Ludlow is hosting a third screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing, a hit documentary about the climate and nature crisis presented by Chris Packham and starring an array of celebrities and leading scientists.

The film, which has been playing at thousands of venues across the UK over the last few months, is proving so popular that audiences keep returning for more.

A spokesperson for Ludlow21, a well-known sustainability group hosting the free screenings, says: “We’re really surprised and pleased at how much energy this film has generated in Ludlow and across Shropshire and the wider UK. It really is a conversation starter and it is giving people vital information about the scale of the crisis we face and the solutions we need to deal with it.”

The 45-minute film, which is based on the National Emergency Briefing hosted for MPs and business and faith leaders in November in Westminster, has been touring the UK with free screenings happening in venues across the four nations including church halls, community centres, and local council offices. Shropshire Council has committed to arranging internal screenings for staff and members from June to September.

The team behind the film hope it will prompt the Government to deliver a televised, Covid style briefing by scientists about the threat from climate and nature breakdown. The issue is becoming an increasingly pressing one with the UK Joint Intelligence Committee (MI5/MI6 and GCHQ) recently issuing a warning that nature loss is now a national security threat and DEFRA warning that UK food supplies could face ‘catastrophic failure’ by 2030.

Jane Moon, a local resident and archaeologist, who attended the previous screening in Ludlow says: “There's no doubt that the future looks grim, but the encouraging thing about the film is that it underlines the solutions. We can do this if we pull together. We need the people in charge to stop staring into the headlights and act. Broadcasting the briefing would be a start.”

Faith Claringbull, who retired to Ludlow three years ago and is an active volunteer in the community, says: “I was rightly shocked by the film. We clearly can’t continue with business as usual. But instead of sitting at home depressed, I want to join with others … to put pressure on our national leaders and make small changes nearer at home.  Everyone needs to see this film.”

The People’s Emergency Briefing is screening on Saturday, June 27 at 4pm at Oscars, Ludlow Assembly Rooms. The film is free, but booking is appreciated.
