The initiative will begin on November 1 and run through the winter and into spring, following a decision by the council’s Services Committee.

The council said free opening during Ludlow’s History Festival this summer had attracted more visitors and received positive feedback from residents and tourists.

The trial aims to encourage more people to visit the museum during quieter months and give them regular opportunities to explore the town’s history.

The museum, housed in the historic Buttercross building at the top of Broad Street, marked its 10th anniversary in 2026. Since opening, it has welcomed more than 50,000 visitors, including school groups and local residents.

At an anniversary reception, the Mayor of Ludlow, Councillor Diane Lyle, spoke about the museum’s place in the town’s cultural life and its role in preserving local heritage.

The museum’s collections cover Ludlow’s archaeology, medieval development, civic history and local traditions, alongside temporary exhibitions.

It is operated by Ludlow Town Council and holds Arts Council Accreditation, a recognised standard for museums.
