The activity is part of a partnership between VARTA Consumer Batteries UK and The Scouts, which aims to inspire young people to take positive action for the planet.

As part of the campaign, young people from 1st Gobowen Scout Group have been collecting used batteries and raising awareness of the importance of recycling batteries safely.

The initiative also includes a range of hands-on activities designed to build understanding of sustainability, including the ‘Ready, Steady, Recycle’ challenge, which encourages better recycling habits at home.

Scout Volunteer Elaine Richardson said “Our Cubs embraced the Varta challenge with so much enthusiasm engaging their families and friends which then extended to their workplaces and the community! Every week more buckets of batteries of all shapes and sizes were coming to the hut.. We are so proud of their engagement and hard work towards their environment conservation and the global issues badges and how they continue to make such a positive impact on our community"

Jacob Steadman ages 10 said “It’s important to recycle the used batteries because they can harm people and the environment. they don’t decompose and can leak out in the black bins or landfills … so need to be disposed of properly… and sometimes can catch fire. When recycled properly can make other things making the most of the resources we have”
