14-year-old Shropshire student celebrates top GCSE maths grade taken two years early
Ellick Spiers achieved a grade 9 in maths in Year 9
A 14-year-old Shropshire student celebrated a top 9 grade in maths after doing his GCSE exam two years early as his sister picked up eight nine grades and one eight in her GCSE exams.

Ellick Spiers, from Wrekin College, also matched his sister Leya as they were both awarded a distinction star in their Extended Maths Certificate.
The siblings picked up their results at Wrekin College with their parents as the family planned a special celebration together for later in the day.
Ellick’s mum said they were extremely proud of their children, adding that Ellick had shown a keen interest in maths from a very young age.
A teacher at the school had suggested that Ellick, who had shown exceptional talent in maths, should consider entering the exam early. The school then offered extra support once he had decided to take his GCSE in year nine.
“He has taken it all in his stride, having always enjoyed numbers,” she added.
“My husband and I are actuaries. I think there may be a love of numbers in the family.”
Joint Acting Headmaster at Wrekin College Ben Smith said they were delighted with last week's results and really pleased for Ellick, who was a very skilled young mathematician.
“It was very much about a cohort of young people who have worked extremely hard but also about individual achievements too,” said Mr Smith.
“Knowing a child well and being able to spot and nurture potential in different areas is really important to us at Wrekin College. We are very pleased for Ellick and Leya, who have been thoroughly committed to their studies and contribute in so many ways to other aspects of school life. They truly deserve to celebrate their exceptional results.”
