Hamnet to be shown in a cinema just miles from where most of it was filmed

The film Hamnet will be shown in Kington, just a few miles from where most of it was filmed.

Hamnet tells the powerful love story behind the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.

After losing their son to the plague, Agnes and William Shakespeare grapple with grief in 16th-century England.

A healer, Agnes must find the strength to care for her surviving children while enduring profound loss.

The film was primarily shot in Herefordshire, with Weobley and Brilley chosen for their beautifully preserved Tudor-era landscapes and architecture.

Hamnet is a 2025 historical drama film directed by Chloé Zhao, who co-wrote the screenplay with Maggie O'Farrell, based on the 2020 novel by O'Farrell.

The film stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal as Agnes and William, alongside Emily Watson, Joe Alwyn, and Jacobi Jupe in supporting roles.

The film received numerous accolades, including winning the Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Buckley at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, and eight nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Zhao, with Buckley winning the Academy Award for Best Actress.

It will be shown at The Old Picture House in Kington on Saturday, May 16 at 7.30pm.
