Watch: Lightning strike sees soap box race evacuated – but there was still fun galore at Krazy Races in Shrewsbury
One of Shropshire's wackiest events returned at the weekend but had to be evacuated due to a lightning strike.
Krazy Races was back at Shrewsbury Quarry on Sunday and saw hundreds of people line the course as 20 hand-crafted karts built by local businesses, organisations and teams tackled the 200 metre downhill track.
Teams including the Flamin Ozzies, The Flying Medics and Woblin' Goblins caused spills, thrills and crashes galore as the competitors dodged the chicanes, obstacles, a new tunnel and a steeper hill.
While most of the event was not affected by the forecasted downpours and weather warning for thunder issued across Shropshire, organisers had to evacuate Quarry Park just before the final race at around 2.30pm due to lightning.
In a statement, organisers said: “Due to lightning we have had to temporarily evacuate today's event.
“The last reported lightning strike was at 2.39pm. We must now wait 30 minutes, if we have no more lightning in this time we can reopen.”
Krazy Races had teamed up with the inaugural Shrewsbury Italian Moto Festival for this year's event, and an array of classic supercars were also being displayed at the Quarry Park including scores of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Alfa Romeos.
However, a planned WWII flypast had to be cancelled following a Spitfire crash in Lincolnshire on Saturday that saw a pilot killed and which grounded several Battle of Britain Memorial fly overs at the weekend.
The Quarry finally reopened at 3.10pm as the lightning storm passed and the racing continued.
The winner of Krazy Races 2024, which was raising money for youth charity SYA, was set to be declared by a public vote following the event.
Krazy Races is coming to Wolverhampton's Queen Square on September 1.
