Salford boss Peter Cklamovski hailed Will Aimson’s spectacular winning goal as the centre-back clinched his side a 2-1 comeback victory over Exeter.

The 32-year-old defender opened his Ammies account in style two minutes from time after Luke Garbutt had cancelled out Sonny Cox’s first-half opener for the Grecians.

His decisive goal meant Salford extended their winning streak in League Two to eight matches.

After the game, an overjoyed Cklamovski joked about the goalscorer’s unlikely contribution in a hard-fought game between two of the division’s in-form sides.

He said: “I was talking to Will Aimson after the game because I was like, ‘don’t shoot, don’t shoot’.

“Credit to him because he backed himself. It was a good shot and a great reward for the team.

“It was a cracking way to win the game. I thought it would be a tricky game of football and credit to the opponent because they made it difficult – especially when we gave the first goal away.

“Then the key for us was to try and get a bit of rhythm and keep the ball in play as much as possible.

“In the second half we managed to get a bit of rhythm momentum and two goals came from it.

“We had to dig in and the players did it; I can’t speak highly enough of them.

“Even in the setback period at the start of the season I knew we were on the right track.

“Now we are getting the rewards for our football, but we have lots more work to do.”

Exeter boss Matt Taylor was delighted with the commitment his players showed against the league leaders.

He said: “I am so proud of what we have done today against the best team in the league, despite the cruelness of the scoreline in the end.

“Could we have been more ruthless with our openings and our moments, and our chances in the game? Yeah, but it took a wonderstrike to beat us.

“We could have come here and got absolutely battered, but we took on one of the best teams in the league.

“I think that anyone that came here today will say they have seen two good sides. They are top of the league because they do it consistently over a period of time, and that’s what we have got to strive to achieve.”

Taylor added that he was glad to see striker Sonny Cox get on the scoresheet in the first half.

He said: “I am delighted to have Sonny on the scoresheet because I want my centre-forward to be scoring goals.

“It will probably not be the cleanest strike he will ever get but it should be great for his confidence.”
