Maddy Cusack’s parents set to give statements on first day of inquest

Former Sheffield United player Cusack died aged 27, and was found at her home address in Lady Lea Road, Horsley, Derbyshire on September 20, 2023.
The parents of Maddy Cusack are expected to provide witness statements on the first day of a long-awaited inquest into her death on Monday.
Former Sheffield United player Cusack died aged 27, and was found at her home address in Lady Lea Road, Horsley, Derbyshire on September 20, 2023. The police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
Within a week of her death, her parents David and Deborah had submitted a written complaint to the club alleging she had been facing issues arising from her working relationship with the team’s head coach at the time, Jonathan Morgan.
United’s own investigation, which concluded in December 2023, found no evidence of wrongdoing.

A Football Association investigation was opened in January 2024, with the governing body saying at the time that its purpose was “to understand whether or not any further action is required under our jurisdiction within football”.
The FA report was shared with the coroner last January, but it will not be published until the inquest has concluded.
Morgan was sacked by Sheffield United in February 2024 after information came to light about a relationship he had with a player while he was in charge at Leicester, but his dismissal was not related to the FA investigation.
Morgan, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing with regards to Cusack, is expected to provide evidence to the inquest on Thursday. Other current and former Sheffield United players are also set to appear as witnesses this week at Chesterfield Coroners’ Court.
