Youri Tielemans apologises for Aston Villa remark after backlash
The midfielder upset some supporters when speaking earlier this week.
Youri Tielemans has apologised for his “choice of words” after angering Villa supporters by saying he had joined a club “above” them in Manchester United.
The midfielder posted a message on social media after comments made during an interview with national newspapers were pounced on by fans.
Tielemans moved to Old Trafford for £35million last month after three successful years with Villa.
Speaking earlier this week, the 29-year-old said he “owed Villa the world” for helping him play his best football but added: “There are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”
The remark sparked anger among some supporters and Tielemans has now moved to soothe things over.
He wrote on Instagram: "Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years.
"I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.
"Wishing the club the best in the future."
Tielemans made 134 appearances for Villa after joining on a free transfer from Leicester in 2023.
His final goal for the club was the opener in May’s 3-0 Europa League final win over Freiburg.
Last season was the first time since 2023 United finished above Villa in the Premier League.
