Wolves v Brentford preview: A chance that Wolves need to take

Football is all about opportunity and Wolves have to take whatever chances they are afforded.

Rob Edwards' side were not expected any chance at Arsenal last time out but they so nearly got a deserved point.

The last time we discussed a good away performance - in the slim defeat to Villa - Wolves followed it up with a dire performance against Nottingham Forest and a heavy defeat to Manchester United.

This time, Wolves have to follow-up their display against the Gunners with a home performance that is worthy of the club's first Premier League win this season.

Playing Brentford should be seen as an opportunity, too, and one that Wolves must take.

Former Wolves midfielder Keith Andrews leads the Bees, who have proved many wrong with a steady start to the campaign.

They come into the game after Wednesday's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final but have some strong players that will cause Wolves problems.

But it is incumbent on Edwards and his side to get it right in their approach, game plan and execution to ensure Molineux supporters finally have something to cheer about.

Wolves need to win the game to avoid equalling Sheffield United's Premier League record of 17 winless games, but the main motivation should be finally getting the season up and running.

Ki-Jana Hoever has been complimentary of the work Edwards has done since being appointed as he tries to get the team back on track.

Hoever said: “I feel like it’s a learning process. It’s not something on day one that he understands you fully, or you understand him, but we’ve had a conversation when he came in, and it was a good conversation.

“He’s a guy whose door is always open, so you can always speak to him, and I respect that. It’s a good trait. He is also somebody who cares about you more than what you do on the pitch.

“For me, there are things more important in life than football, and family is one of those things, so I appreciate that somebody actually cares about those things and asks how my family is.

“Obviously, I’ve only worked with him for a short period of time, but he’s a hard working coach, he wants us to do well, wants us to work hard, and I can only appreciate that and try to take as much from it as I can and try to improve as a player.”

Hoever is one of the players that faces a fight for his position at right-wing-back.

He was doing battle with Jackson Tchatchoua and won his place back for the United fixture, but Matt Doherty returned from injury to take that spot against Arsenal.

Emmanual Agbadou is now with the Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations and his place in defence is up for grabs.

Ladislav Krejci could take it, but it would likely mean changing system to two midfielders due to injuries to Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, while Santi Bueno will also be keen for a chance under Edwards.

Tolu Arokodare is still available after missing out on a Nigeria call-up and Edwards will have to decide on whether to start him following his goal against Arsenal, amid Jorgen Strand Larsen's struggles of late.
