Wolves' stance on key defender revealed amid transfer interest

Wolves are reluctant to let Emmanuel Agbadou leave on loan this month but could sanction his departure for the right deal, the Express & Star understands.

The 28-year-old, who has recently been away with Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations, is attracting interest from other clubs and Wolves have already turned down an offer from Besiktas.

The Turkish side made an offer to loan him for a fee of around £1.7million (€2million), with the option to buy of just under £8.7million (€10million), but it was swiftly rejected.

The Express & Star understands that Wolves are not keen to loan the defender this month, but could be open to a move that included an obligation to buy Agbadou, or a straight permanent deal.

Wolves are extremely likely to be relegated from the Premier League this season and would be willing to listen to offers for certain players if the deal is right for the club, in preparation for life in the Championship.

Agbadou has been a key player for Wolves since signing in an initial £15million deal, rising to £16.6million, in January last year, but he has missed the last six games in all competitions due to his participation in AFCON.

The Ivory Coast lost 3-2 to Egypt in the quarter-finals on Saturday and Agbadou will now report back for duty at Wolves.

Agbadou only played once for his country, however, in the final group game against Gabon. He played the full 90 minutes in that 3-2 win but was otherwise understudy to the first choice defenders.

When asked if the defender has got to earn his place back in the team due to Wolves' good run of performances and results, head coach Rob Edwards said: "The lads are doing well right now and I am someone that, if you've got the shirt and you're doing really well, then there's a good chance that you can stay in.

"Unless I've got to make a really big call and decide that it's not the right thing for that game.

"But that's what we want, we want people in good form providing me with difficult decisions."
