Wolves goal hero welcomes competition and wants 'quality' signings
The wideman netted a brace in Saturday’s win over Stoke.
Two-goal hero Rodrigo Gomes has expressed hope Wolves can secure more “quality” signings before Tuesday’s deadline - claiming they can’t have enough competition for places.
Gomes responded to boss Cesar Peixoto outlining his desire to add another right winger by breaking a 13-match goal drought in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Stoke.
The 23-year-old wideman struck twice in three first half minutes to turn the match on its head after Sam Gallagher had fired the visitors in front inside 80 seconds.
Gomes later confirmed he had heard Peixoto’s comments, delivered in a press conference on Friday, in which he explained signing a right-sided, left-footed winger was top of his transfer wishlist.
But he said: “I saw that (what Peixoto said) but it is normal. We need some signings to close the team.
“This is a tough league, with loads of games. We need players to help. I am one who can help but we need more.
“It is always a good moment to score and I feel very happy. We need players, we need quality to help us achieve our goal.
“We want to be champions and we need as many players with quality.”
Gomes’ double was his first since joining Wolves from Braga two years ago, as he found the net for the first time since the 2-1 win over Liverpool back in March.
Second half goals from Raul Jimenez and Jordan James sealed a convincing win for Wolves, who sit second in the early season table ahead of Tuesday’s trip to bookies’ title favourites West Ham.
Peixoto’s men have won four out of five matches in all competitions and remain unbeaten.
Gomes thinks belief is returning to both players and supporters after the pain of last season’s relegation.
Asked about the Molineux atmosphere, he replied: “We need that. It is going to be a long season.
“We need the fans on our side and if we perform like this, they will be on our side for sure.
“We need to fight to the end. We want to win many games here. To score, with this noise, is amazing.”
“I think you can see in the way we play, we look happy and we look confident,” he said.
“We need to keep going and doing that. We are in good momentum, so keep it going.
“This league is very tough. West Ham dropped with us and expect to be a top team. We need to work hard, do our jobs and try to win the game.”
