Wolves chief in Portugal for talks with new boss

The club have plenty to plan since making a surprise change in the dugout.

Wolves sporting director Matt Jackson has flown to Portugal to discuss plans for next season with new boss Cesar Peixoto.

The club’s transfer strategy has been on the agenda, with Peixoto having been tasked with delivering a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

His predecessor, Rob Edwards, had played an integral role in the club’s approach to the transfer window.

Just how much of that will change since last week’s surprise change of head coach remains unclear at this stage, though agent Jorge Mendes is expected to play a key role having facilitated the deal to bring Peixoto to Wolves.

Reports the club are now targeting a move for Famalicao right-back Rodrigo Pinheiro are, however, believed to be wide of the mark.

Peixoto returned to Portugal after signing a two-year deal to replace Rob Edwards at the end of last week. The 46-year-old is still awaiting a work permit before he can officially begin work at Compton Park and is eager to get as much in place as possible, with pre-season viewed as key.

Talks have been planned with senior players before the bulk of the squad returns to Compton Park in early July.

The futures of several players need to be resolved, among them striker Sasa Kalajdzic, who still had one-year remaining on his contract.

Kalajdzic, who has made only two league starts in four injury-hit years, spent last season on loan at LASK and is keeping an open mind as to what happens next.

“I am looking forward to the conversations I am going to have,” he said. “If I am there, I will give it my all.

“Maybe it is unfinished business. At the end of the day we will see what happens in the summer and what is the best for both.”
