Wolves boss backs signing to prove doubters wrong

Wolves boss Rob Edwards says Adam Armstrong is motivated to prove people wrong and show he can cut it at Premier League level.

The deadline day signing made a good start with an assist on his debut, despite Wolves losing at home to Chelsea.

However, that only takes the striker to six goals and eight assists in 89 top flight games, compared to his Championship record of 91 goals and 37 assists in 277 matches.

Armstrong has been signed with next season in mind, following Wolves' expected relegation, but Edwards says the forward is also eager to show his quality now.

"No doubt," Edwards said when asked if Armstrong wanted to prove people wrong in the Premier League.

"I've not really spoken to him about that, I don't think it's something that I've needed to speak about.

"But especially in this industry, you're always having to prove yourself, whatever sort of line of work you're in, whether you're a player, a coach, whatever it might be.

"He's definitely hungry. He's really, really keen to come to the club as well, which is music to my ears when I hear that.

"I think he's got the right mindset to try and show people.

"Adam's played at this level as well and I think that's important to say.

"I've admired him for a long, long time. I really like him.

"Someone who's versatile. He's a striker, but can play in a number of different areas on that top line as well.

"He's got a brilliant attitude, great work ethic and desire, but he's a really good finisher as well, someone who can score.

"I just think it made complete sense for the here and the now and for the going forward as well. Another really, really good signing."

Armstrong started out on the left against Chelsea but after a system change he moved more centrally alongside Tolu Arokodare, who he assisted for the goal.

The head coach says that adaptability will be important for Armstrong as he aims to make a success of his Wolves career.

"I want him to be the best version of him and he can fit into our group in a number of different ways," Edwards said.

"I think we've shown different sides to ourselves quite a lot. The league demands that almost every week you're going to be tweaking your game plan a little bit because you're either up against an obscenely strong team or a very different style.

"We have to be able to adapt tactically while still trying to keep a lot of what we do and I think Adam fits into many things. He's got a real football intelligence.

"I want him to be the best version of him, but he'll fit nicely into what we do."
