West Brom hero: James Morrison needs right support this summer
The Baggies are braced for a big transfer window.
Club hero Paul Robinson has called on Albion to give James Morrison the best backing possible in this summer’s transfer window.
The former full-back accepts the Baggies don’t have the same financial clout as some of their Championship rivals.
But he says it is essential the club get their recruitment right, as they look to push up the table following last season’s narrow escape from relegation.
Morrison is preparing for his first season in charge and Robinson told the Express & Star: “The club can't be silly and waste money. They've got to play smart with it all and do the right things.
"Obviously, the teams that are in the league as well, you're not going to compete with them on a financial level.
“Mozza will understand what type of players he wants and the club have got to back him. That's what the club have got to do.
“They've got to support him in their decisions.
"I just hope the club support in the right way and again it's West Brom people in the background that need to help people like Mozza do a really good job.
“I really hope the club see that. I hope the club understand that.”
Morrison oversaw a remarkable turnaround after becoming the club’s third head coach of the season following the sackings of Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay, the latter lasting less than two months in the role.
Under his guidance, Albion went on a 10-match unbeaten run to secure survival with a match to spare.
Robinson, who made 239 appearances for the Baggies between 2003 and 2010, hopes the club can build on the momentum with a strong summer.
He said: "You've got to look at the squad. What Mozza's done there is played the players in their best positions.
"Obviously Matt Gill coming in as well was a big plus for him with his experiences with Russell Martin.
“You put all that together and you're only looking forwards when those sort of changes happen.
"It's a collective thing now. That stability needs to carry on into next season where you're buying the right players or you're bringing in the right players that are on free transfers.”
