"The mentality was good" - Wolves boss pleased with professionalism in FA Cup triumph

Rob Edwards has praised Wolves' mentality as they overcame harsh conditions to beat Grimsby in an old fashioned FA Cup showdown.

The Premier League club arrived at League Two venue Blundell Park to find wind, rain, freezing temperatures and a shredded mud bath of a pitch.

But Santi Bueno's second half finish was the difference and Edwards was pleased with how his side handled the potential banana skin of a fixture.

"It was a great game, quite an aggressive game," he said.

"It was an interesting game, really difficult conditions, really challenging conditions. Obviously for both teams, so it's the same for both of us.

"It was a different type of game, a bit of a throwback and one that really we could only win by winning and being professional and doing it right.

"I don't think it was ever going to be a day for beautiful football, it was never going to be a day for trying to build and play from the back. I think they hoped we would, but no, we played with some realism, showed really good spirit and fight, did the basics well and came through.

"The three main things we spoke about was mentality, it was running and it was decision-making.

"I thought we did those three things really well. We didn't play in dangerous areas, we made good decisions and we did match the running.

"I thought we got stronger as the second half went on and then the mentality was good."

The pitch only got worse throughout the game and was torn up by full-time, as Wolves' Premier League stars endured a completely different scenario than what they are used to.

Edwards said: "I'd have loved it!

"This would have suited me because I wouldn't have had to pass the ball. I could have just headed it and kicked it."

He added: "It was an interesting day for some of our Brazilians, but they won't forget it!

"We talked a lot over the last few days about mentality.

"In a way for us, it was great that they were able to do what they did against Manchester United earlier in the season, because we could use that, lean on that as well.

"Completely respect the opposition, the conditions, the game, the competition and everything, and make sure that we try to do things that are in our control and do them well. Running, the fight, the basics, we did. We showed a good mentality."
