Shrewsbury Town FA Cup player ratings v Sutton: One sparkling 8 as Salop see off potential banana skin

Shrewsbury Town will participate in the third round of the FA Cup in 2026 after overcoming the banana skin of in-form Sutton United, writes Joe Chapman.

Town emerged 2-1 winners after extra time, having fallen behind to a Kai Jennings goal directly from a free kick, thanks to replies from Ismeal Kabia and John Marquis, on a night when three players were sent off.

Sutton deservedly took the lead with only 20 minutes of normal time remaining when Jennings picked out the far corner of Will Brook's goal directly from a corner, and when Josh Ruffels was sent off for two bookable offences, it appeared as though Town would be victims of a classic FA Cup upset before the third round had even been drawn.

The individual brilliance of Kabia saved their skin in stoppage time, when he cut inside from the left hand side and fizzed an unstoppable effort from the edge of the box beyond the otherwise resolute Jack Sims in the home goal.

Prior to extra time the hosts' winger David Ogbonna was also given his marching orders for two quick cautions, which levelled up the numbers of personnel on each side. Within a couple of minutes of extra time, Marquis popped up to take full advantage of a Jennings error in his own penalty area and fire Salop in front.

Junior Eccleston became the third player on the night to be shown a red card, this one a straight sending off, when referee Jacob Miles spotted something as he wrestled with Chuks Aneke in the corner when anticipating the ball.

Over 120 minutes, with three goals and three red cards, but Town are in the hat for the third round and have opened themselves up to the potential of a Premier League or Championship tie.

Here are our player ratings:

Will Brook 8*

Fabulous early save, at point blank range, to prevent Clucas from putting through his own net with a header goalward when attempting to clear his lines. Made some positive decision making and wasn't slow in racing off his line to clear Town's lines. Also saved Stubbs' skin somewhat when reacting quickly to deny Harris after he'd been left with the ball in the box and kept Simper at bay from a free kick, too. Important contribution throughout.

Luca Hoole 7

Faced up to the tricky Ogbonna on the wing who saw plenty of the ball in the first half and needed plenty of attention. Hoole was measured at times but Ogbonna did sneak past him a couple of times and created half chances from those openings. Important covering when, with Sutton having taken the lead, he put off Harris when in on goal. Nailed a couple of Sutton shirts with excellently timed challenges.

Tom Anderson 6

Found the physical and mobile Jayden Harris a handful and, in the first half, was spun when pushing up, leaving a hole in the Salop defence. A little rushed when in possession and erratic with his passing as a result. As his attack-minded teammates eventually did their job in getting Town back into the tie, Anderson stood up to the task.

Sam Stubbs 5

A long ball after only a minute caused problems for Shrewsbury's defence and Stubbs was cautioned as a result of pulling down Ashley Nadesan on the run. Almost ran into trouble when surrendering the ball in his own box and Brook was required to deny Harris.

Will Boyle 6

Mixed success when attempting his cross-field balls to right wing-back Hoole on the far side of the pitch, sometimes only succeeding in surrendering possession and returning the ball to the pent up hosts. Made a nuisance of himself in the final third at the start of the second half and hit the bar with an inventive attempt.

Sam Clucas 6

Thankful for teammate Brook that he didn't become the latest Shrews player to put through his own net at his near post when attempting to clear the ball. Clearly comfortable on the ball but under pressure as Sutton pressed in numbers across the pitch and struggled to contain breakaways in the later stages but showed nous when Salop were in control.

Isaac England 6

The teenager was culpable of giving away a dangerous free kick on the edge of his own box which Jennings sent whistling just past Brook's goal. Was tigerish in the challenge and had a job on trying to blunt the influence from deep of Jake Taylor. Sloppy on the ball but did make a key pass before being withdrawn.

Josh Ruffels 4

Had to get to grips with the early tempo set by Sutton, who responded to the vociferous backing from the stands from the get go and came onto their visitors. Did show composure with the ball at his feet to move it on quickly, in keeping with the pace of the game and made a couple of key passes on the break to create chances. Two yellow cards meant an early bath.

Ismeal Kabia 7

Lively in the first period, and on the receiving end of some rough treatment when his turn of foot proved too much for opposing players. Played on the break to good effect at the start of the second half and was denied by Sims. Pace took him away from his man on the break throughout. A stunning goal which he'd threatened to carve out moments before.

Anthony Scully 5

Had next to zero influence in the first half and spent much of it working out of possession and chasing amber shirts as Sutton impressed on the ball. Became the first player in a black shirt to test keeper Jack Sims with a free kick early into the second half, but this was a quieter evening for the playmaker.

George Lloyd 5

Used his pace to skin captain Edon Pruti early doors and he was booked as a result. The same fate befell Muller on the half hour mark. Missed a chance six yards out when needing to spin and shoot in one movement. Worked hard on a tough night and felt plenty of attention from the opposition.

Substitutes

Taylor Perry (for England 62) 6

Replaced young England shortly before Sutton took the lead. Brought more energy to the press which Sutton successfully negotiated for the most part.

Chuks Aneke (for Lloyd 77) 6

Couldn't keep his header down when fellow sub Marquis crossed for him with Shrewsbury, at that stage, trailing. Golden chance to make it 3-1 when in on goal but dragged his attempt wide. Important in winding the clock down at the death.

John Marquis Marquis (for Scully 77) 7

Crossed for Aneke who headed over and then worked really hard and left the ref with a decision to make when he sent off Ogbonna, who'd denied quick free kick being taken. Lively during his cameo and forced the error which led to his goal. Plenty of ground covered and hard work defensively, too.

Tom Sang (for Stubbs 82) 6

As Shrewsbury got back into the tie and then eventually on top following his introduction, Sang was available as an option and calm in an environment which was lively and aggressive.

Tommy McDermott (for Kabia 90) 6

Really positive showing from the bench, bringing energy, quick feet and relief for fatigued teammates.
