Shrewsbury Town debrief: What did we learn from Salop's defeat at Stockport?

Shrewsbury Town's defeat at Edgeley Park can be split into two segments.

Firstly, the wellbeing of one of the Salop players is more important than any football match.

So when Morgan Feeney was down for more than 10 minutes, unmoved, with a serious neck injury, the only thing anyone could hope for was that the defender was going to be OK.

Thankfully, we now know that he has been discharged from the hospital, and given a clean bill of health.

For everybody in the stadium, when someone is down for that long, you cannot help but worry. Both medical teams were first-class in their efforts to get the 25-year-old off the pitch safely, and for that, they must be commended.

Most Shrewsbury fans are aware of how much Gareth Ainsworth has his players' backs. He consistently refers to it in his press conferences. If they give their all, then they will hear no complaints from him.

Morgan Feeney, as a player, epitomises someone who gives his all week in and week out.

The other part to discuss is the football. Shrewsbury fell back-to-back 1-0 defeats on the road at Edgeley Park thanks to Ollie Norwood's superb free kick in the first half.

Salop have become harder to beat in recent weeks, and they made life difficult for County. They are no longer shipping goals at will, but what they have struggled to do of late is find the back of the net.

That was once again the case as Shrewsbury had to wait until Taylor Perry's effort from distance in the 81st minute to register their first shot on target in the game.

It was similar to the loss at Charlton. The home side were deserved winners in the match, but Shrewsbury had one golden opportunity at the end where they could have potentially stolen something from the game. That fell to John Marquis who was denied by Ben Hinchliffe from point-blank range.

There was a change of tactic from Ainsworth post-match. After he discussed the health of Morgan Feeney, he moved on to discuss the game.

He revealed that Town are going to have to attack more from here on. Ainsworth knows his side have become harder to beat, but now he needs to add that attacking threat, which at the moment everyone can see they are lacking.

He also demonstrated he will have stern words with his players when needs to.

The 51-year-old revealed another side to himself on Tuesday night saying he had to get into a couple of individuals at half-time at Edgeley Park.

What goes without saying is that Shrewsbury need incomings, and they need to strengthen. They have been close to a couple of new players, but as of yet, nothing has come off for Salop.

They need to get out of this tough run of fixtures, being as close to 20th place as possible if they still have any intentions of trying to keep their status in for another season.

Injuries to Aaron Pierre, Luca Hoole and Leo Castledine are also not helpful - Shrewsbury's squad is already incredibly thin.

Look at their bench yesterday. A fantastic story to see young Joe Morris in the Town squad, but it shows you how light on the ground they really are right now.
