Rob Edwards praises 'unassuming leader' in Wolves' win at Grimsby

Rob Edwards has applauded 'unassuming leader' Santi Bueno after his goal booked Wolves' place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The centre-back's fine finish on the hour mark broke the deadlock as Wolves squeezed past League Two Grimsby in a tricky cup tie on Sunday afternoon.

S.Bueno has been a regular in Edwards' team for most of his time in charge and the head coach had nothing but praise for the defender after his winning moment and late block to deny the hosts an equaliser.

"Santi has been someone who is really growing on me," Edwards said.

"He goes about his business as an unassuming, very quiet leader. I think he's been playing very well for us.

"Two clean sheets in a row, it was good. He's got the all-important goal today and an amazing tackle right at the end as well.

"He's just a good footballer and he showed up.

"A brilliant finish, great run.

"Just the darting run across and whatever he got on it, I was really, really pleased to see it fly in the top corner.

"I think he's playing really well. It's another clean sheet for us, I think that's four since we've arrived, which is good.

"Today was really, really challenging. They asked loads of questions of us and to limit them to one save was good. Credit to the lads."

Wolves are set to lose several players in the summer when relegation to the Championship is confirmed.

When asked if S.Bueno could be one to stay and be relied on next season, Edwards added: "I really like him.

"It's early right now, after this game, to talk about things like that, but I do really like Santi Bueno.

But I do really, really like Santi Bueno."

Wolves looked after ball well in the first half and controlled the fixture, but struggled to create enough chances.

They were better in the second half, but missed opportunities to extend their lead, as they hung on to their slim advantage in the dying minutes of the fixture.

Edwards believes some tweaks at half-time helped his side get over the line.

"You've got to earn the right in these games and they were going to come with loads of energy and intensity, and we expected that," Edwards said.

"The game's quite 50-50 and in the balance in the first half. We talked about making another pass or two in the final third. Once we got it there, we felt we could work our way in, and we felt we could cross the ball more, exactly how the goal was scored.

"Keep it there, maybe come back out, and we'll have to have one or two passes. It's obviously not conducive today to playing total football, but that was one of the things we talked about amongst others.

"Doing the basics well, stopping crosses, not giving too many silly fouls away in our defending final third, which we did better. I thought the players carried that out well after half-time."
